EAA Airventure 2021
Here a flight of four Warbirds is demonstrating the safest and fastest way to land a group of aircraft in a potential combat area. Fighters are vulnerable when they're landing, so it's important to get everyone on the ground and secured as rapidly as possible. To accomplish that, the flight flies slightly past the landing strip, then one by one the airplanes peel of, and circle to the runway. The group ends up landing in a closely ordered single file. In this photo, the first airplane has peeled off and is turning away, while the second airplane has just begun the maneuver.
These are the Warbirds. They specialize in restoring and flying these beautiful historical fighting aircraft, each of which is privately owned by a member of the group. It takes thousands of hours of work to restore one of these airplanes, as well as dedication and lots of practice to safely demonstrate these formation flying skills.
