Rock River, Janesville, Wisconsin (USA)
Rock River at Janesville, Wisconsin (USA), in the hour before dawn. I thought I was going in the water here. I finally stopped sliding after I laid down on the ice. This is just a little backwater though. I'd have survived. The main river is beyond the ice in the middle. It's best not to fool around with that. A young man's body was found in the main channel, just the previous day.
Today, the lake is in a good mood, but according to Wikipedia, an estimated 6000 ships and 30,000 lives have been lost in maritime disasters on the great lakes. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_shipwrecks_in_the_Great_Lakes) The wreck of the Niagra, a wooden hulled side wheel freight and passenger steamer, lies about a mile off this beach in 55 feet (17 meters) of water, where she sank after catching fire on September 24, 1856. Approximately 60 of 300 passengers on board were lost. (http://www.wisconsinshipwrecks.org/vessel/Details/455)
